Stuff Christians Like

In addition to the articles and book reviews I write, I want to make an effort to link to other blogs, articles, and videos around the internet that I’ve found to be right in line with the things I write about here.

Many times throughout the day I find myself reading something that takes my breath away, or something that articulates what I’ve determined to be inexpressible on my own. Or something that just make me laugh uncontrollably. There are so many gifted writers and artists in the world saying things that need to be said, and I want to get their message out to as many as I can.

One of these writers is Jon Acuff. He authors the tremendously popular blog StuffChristiansLike, which is a satirical look at all of the ridiculous things that Christians do and believe as we try and live our lives following Jesus. He pokes fun at every stereotype in the Christian world, but in a gentle and faithful way; he does not sit back and ridicule but instead corrects the twisted views of spirituality that float around in every realm of Christianity.

Jon is putting the finishing touches on his first book, published by Zondervan, and I’m pretty sure he is going to be a huge hit in the writing world; he has the great gifts of grounded humility, creativity, and wit.

I’ve read every single post he’s written on his blog, which is a bit sobering when I see that today’s post is #592, but his writing is borderline addicting. On Wednesdays he tends to take a more serious tone and write deeper about life as a disciple of Jesus. It is these days when he is at his best.

His favorite parable to write about is that of The Prodigal Son. His latest Wednesday posting was on this subject and was quite tremendous:

#585. Thinking God will run out of welcome home banners

I also liked this recent one:

#591. The things your kid brings home from Sunday School.

So, go to Jon’s site and browse through some of the 500+ blog posts. Be prepared to have deep belly-laughs–he has hurt my own sides more than once. And be on the lookout for his first book next April.
