Passion for Truth: The Life of John Henry Newman

by Fr. Juan R. Velez

This week's giveaway is a brand new copy of Passion for Truth: The Life of John Henry Newman (TAN books, paperback, 618 pages) by Fr. Juan R. Velez. As I said in my review of the book:

"The field of Newman biography is vast and varied. People have been writing about him for years and his recent beatification provoked even more titles. What I like about Fr. Velez's entry, and what really sets it apart, is that it's balanced through and through. He carefully swings between Newman the philosopher and Newman the priest; Newman the courageous truth-seeker and Newman the delicate soul; Newman the elite intellect and Newman the faithful friend.

Before his death Newman instructed writers not to exaggerate his life with praise, but to produce "a real, fair, downright account of me according to the best ability and judgment of the writer." In showcasing Newman the man, and balancing his weaknesses and fears with his courage and genius, Fr. Velez accomplishes that in Passion for Truth."

In order to win this week's giveaway, leave a comment below answering this question:

Which field interests you most: philosophy, theology, literature, or poetry?

The winner will be randomly selected next Friday and the giveaway item will be sent out, free-of-charge, shortly thereafter.

UPDATE:

The drawing is now closed. Congratulations to Mlcihak for winning this week! Check your e-mail for instructions on receiving the book. If you don’t see an e-mail from me, check your spam box—apparently e-mails with “giveaway” in the title are prone to end up there.

In the future I'll be giving away more books and resources, sometimes multiple items per giveaway! So subscribe via feed reader or email to ensure you never miss your chance to win.

I am interested in Theology and Philosophy.

  • James Brockmeier

I am in my 6th year of studying philosophy and theology, first as a lay student now as a seminarian, and I would have to say poetry. Poetry opens up a world of meaning in a way explanations and systematic inquiries just can't!

  • Inocencio

Literature because to me it encompasses them all.

  • Stephanie Mann

Theology: As Blessed John Henry Newman commented, it must have its place among the subjects a university teaches. Without it, Literature will take over!

  • Jeanette_martin

    I am interested in Philosophy.

  • Teresa

Hard to select one, but it would have to be theology.
Thank you for this very nice giveaway!

  • Paula

Theology. I'm kind of obsessed. When my brain is full and feel like a need a break, then Literature. Either C.S. Lewis or zombies.

  • cairo

    Theology!

  • Benoit Meyrieux

I am working on a MA in Theology and love it. However I do not forget my first love, Philosophy!

  • Mlcihak

I love theology and have spent much time in study. I call myself a Catholic geek and love to wash my brain in Everything Catholic.

Always theology. Despite one of my aunt-in-law's best attempts to get me interested in more poetry.

  • Rachelle Nordman

I think theology but I really don't know much about philosophy so no real opinion about it.

  • ce58

Definitely theology, hence why it is my major :)

Philosophy is becoming big for me...I've just started reading Coppleston's series to give me a solid grounding and background on the subject.

For me I would say that theology and philosophy would be my first area of interest followed by literature and poetry. However I have to like literature and poetry because my first BA in in English Language and Literature, but my masters is going to be in theology and philosophy. Once I finish my second BA in History.

I studied all of them in college and I'm going to go with theology :)

theology better interest me, as i'm in the master's program at franciscan university of steubenville now. yet, the philosophy class i'm taking now, and the phil classes i've taken at other institutions, including my undergrad, a secular institution, fascinated me and i will always be grateful for the fact that in them, i learned how to think critically and formulate inteligent arguments.

Arg, I want to choose more than one....

    Theoletry? Phliterature? Philoetry? Phil-theo-liter-ambic Pentameter?

Philosophy, I suppose, if I really must choose just one. : )

Theology... The study of God... What a privileged study it is

  • Deb

    I'd say Theology is tops!

  • Seacadet114

I would say theology since it puts all other academia into the context of truth.

  • Greg Aitchison

My wife thinks I'm a nerd because I read books on theology and philosophy during my free time instead of laid-back novels. I think that's partially because I AM a theology/philosophy nerd and partially because I'm a middle school religion teacher (CatholicReligionTeacher.com) always trying to improve my knowledge of the faith so I can pass it on to every student I teach. Thank God for so many great, orthodox, relevant, readable, and readily available Catholic theology and philosophy books today!

P.S. Just for fun: "Theology is simply that part of religion that requires brains." - G.K. Chesterton

  • LizEst

Theology comes out number one for me...though the others are enjoyable as well!

  • Ashley

Hard to choose. Theology is my preference with a good dose of philosophy.

  • Charley

Theology has to be first, followed by philosophy but lately I've had a growing yearning for literature especially the French Catholic Literary Revival after reading The Diary of a Country Priest. Amazingly profound!

  • Manfred

Philosophy FTW - Philo of Nature, Metaphysics, Philo Anthro!

  • Vernon Kuznia

    Theology

  • Tombucko

Philosophy because it addresses the most basic of questions.

  • crossed quotes

Poetry. Was it Aquinas who said poetry is the only way to approach the great myseries? Or was that Chesterton?

  • http://twitter.com/EdmundMitchell Edmund Mitchell

Theology is the most exhilarating of the four.

  • Tmerkel

I think that theology is the best
