The Shadowlands of C.S. Lewis

by Peter Kreeft

In honor of my interview with Dr. Peter Kreeft, this week's giveaway features his book titled The Shadowlands of C.S. Lewis: Selections from the Writings of C.S. Lewis. Here's the publisher's description:

"Following up the success of the acclaimed movie on C.S. Lewis Shadowlands, this book is the ideal volume for those who want to know more about Lewis and the writings of this great Christian author. Peter Kreeft, a best-selling author in his own right—and one who acknowledges a great personal debt to Lewis—selects and introduces some of Lewis' best-loved works.

Having studied, written about and taught Lewis' writings for years, Kreeft has been able to select and introduce the best of Lewis' vast and varied writings for the benefit of the reader. Kreeft has edited and organized Lewis' writings around the central themes of the movie: Earth (the shadowlands), Joy (the mysterious longing), Heaven (the land from which the shadows fall), the Golden Key (how to reach the land of light), and the Problem of Pain. Kreeft also includes the fantasy by George MacDonald (Lewis' acknowledged master) from which the idea of Shadowlands was derived. For Lewis-lovers, and those who are curious about the man behind the movie, this book will be illuminating and inspiring."

In order to win this week's giveaway, leave a comment below answering this question:

What is your favorite C.S. Lewis book or quote?

The winner will be randomly selected next Friday and the giveaway item will be sent out, free-of-charge, shortly thereafter.

UPDATE:

The drawing is now closed. Congratulations to Thom for winning this week! Check your e-mail for instructions on receiving the book. If you don’t see an e-mail from me, check your spam box—apparently e-mails with “giveaway” in the title are prone to end up there.

In the future I'll be giving away more books and resources, sometimes multiple items per giveaway! So subscribe via feed reader or email to ensure you never miss your chance to win.

Screwtape Letters is my favorite C.S. Lewis book.

However, I'm really just shamelessly commenting in hopes that prayers from you and your readers will get this overdue baby out of me! I'm 40 weeks and 4 days with my first child and am ready to meet this baby!

    • http://www.brandonvogt.com/ Brandon Vogt

Ah! Lord, we ask you to give Sara the strength and perseverance she needs, and for you to move this baby along. St. Gerard Majella and Mother Mary, pray for us!

    • Bondurant44

Lord be with Sara in this time of need and guide her and her unborn child through a safe and expedient delivery. Amen.

  • Stuart Dunn

Also the Screwtape Letters. It's just such a unique book and I pick up something new from it every time I read it. Prayers for a safe and soon delivery!

One C.S. Lewis quote that I like is, “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”

  • erika

“You don’t have a soul. You are a soul. You have a body.”

  • JoAnna Wahlund

“And above all, you must be asking which door is the true one; not which pleases you best by its paint and panelling…the question should never be: ‘Do I like that kind of service?’ but ‘Are these doctrines true: Is holiness there? Does my conscience move me towards this? Is my reluctance to move to this door due to my pride, or my mere taste, or my personal dislike for this particular door-keeper?”

    ― C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

As for my favorite work, tough call. I love the Narnia series, but both Screwtape and Mere Christianity are excellent as well. I own them all. :)

    Sara, praying for you!!

The humans live in time but our Enemy destines them to eternity. He therefore, I believe, wants them to attend chiefly to two things, to eternity itself, and to that point of time which they call the Present. For the Present is the point at which time touches eternity. Of the present moment, and of it only, humans have an experience analogous to the experience which our Enemy has of reality as a whole; in it alone freedom and actuality are offered them. He would therefore have them continually concerned either with eternity (which means being concerned with Him) or with the Present — either meditating on their eternal union with, or separation from, Himself, or else obeying the present voice of conscience, bearing the present cross, receiving the present grace, giving thanks for the present pleasure.

    Two favorite C.S. Lewis quotes:

"Next to the Blessed Sacrament itself, your neighbor is the holiest object presented to your senses" (The Weight of Glory)

"How monotonously alike all the great tyrants and conquerors have been: how gloriously different are the saints." (Mere Christianity)

  • Jacki W.

Definitely the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. I read the whole series over and over as a child.

  • C. Roberts

My favorite Lewis books are the Space Trilogy. I like this quote from Perelandra:

"The world is so much larger than I thought. I thought we went along paths--but it seems there are no paths. The going itself is the path.”

    ― C.S. Lewis, Perelandra

  • Thom

Favorite Lewis book is definitely Mere Christianity. Very concise explanation of Christianity.

A man can no more diminish God's glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word, 'darkness' on the walls of his cell.

  • Christopher Donatto

My favorite C.S. Lewis book, so far, is Perelandra. What an imagination! I'd have to stop and close my eyes and concentrate to try and visualize his world.

  • Christi Edwards

    My Dear Lucy,
I wrote this story for you, but when I began it I had not realized that girls grow quicker than books. As a result you are already too old for fairy tales, and by the time it is printed and bound you will be older still. But some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again.

C.S.Lewis, dedication of "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe"

It is always winter, but never Christmas...

  • Mikesdak

I am working on Mere Christianity right now. I did like Screwtape, but I think I have enjoyed "The Great Divorce" most of all so far. Quick read, vivid images.

  • http://www.facebook.com/dr.paologasparini Paolo Gasparini

My single favorite C.S. Lewis quote: (The Latin Letters of C.S. Lewis [trans. Martin Moynihan; South Bend: St. Augustine's Press, 1998], from Letter 23, written 17th March, 1953, from Oxford: "What you say about the present state of mankind is true: indeed, it is even worse than you say.

For they neglect not only the law of Christ but even the Law of Nature as known by the Pagans. For now they do not blush at adultery, treachery, perjury, theft and the other crimes which I will not say Christian Doctors, but the Pagans and the Barbarians have themselves denounced.

They err who say "the world is turning pagan again". Would that it were! The truth is that we are falling into a much worse state.

"Post-Christian man" is not the same as "pre-Christian man". He is as far removed as virgin is from widow: there is nothing in common except want of a spouse: but there is a great difference between a spouse-to-come and a spouse lost."

I love the Space Trilogy, also - hard to pick a favorite from those, but it is probably Perelandra, too, although That Hideous Strength is very, very close.

    Mere Christianity

  • http://www.morningquiettime.wordpress.com/ Roberto Bacalski

When I was in 4th grade I read the first four books of The Chronicles of Narnia. (I never got through the whole series!) My favorite was The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Such a wonderful fantasy for my nine-year-old imagination to savor!

  • Joe Wetterling

It's hard to pick one, but I love The Weight of Glory. The end is fantastic, very quotable - and, if I recall, a favorite of Dr. Kreeft as well.

"There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal... it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit—immortal horrors or everlasting splendours."

  • http://marthasorbit.com/dailyblog/ Martha

I am new to your site, and am looking forward to your posts. I found you through following Ignatius Press on Fb. My favorite quote of C.S. Lewis is, “You don’t have a soul. You are a soul. You have a body.” And of course, I loved the Narnia series.

"The safest road to Hell is the gradual one -- the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts..." - The Screwtape Letters

  • Benoit Meyrieux

Love this one: "Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance. The only thing it cannot be is moderately important."

  • "There is only one tragedy in the end, not to have been a saint." - Léon Bloy
