My Internet Fast

When I read about the huge impact of Jen Fulwiler’s “technology Fast”, I knew I should do something similar. But being so connected to blogs, Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and text messaging has made me leery to pull the plug. To make things more difficult, I just bought my first-ever smart phone which connects me to the Internet wherever I go and often makes me feel even more bound to the digital world.

But Jen’s recent post at the Register settled things for me. Following her lead, I’m taking a week off from the Internet, beginning tomorrow (Friday) and ending next Saturday. I’ll still use the Internet sporadically for work purposes, but I won’t check my email, open any text messages, read any blogs, or log into Facebook, Twitter, Google+ or YouTube.
It’ll be nice to be disconnected but I think the most liberating point will be at the end when I open Google Reader, see 1,000+ unread blog posts, and then click “Mark All As Read”. It will be a sign that, at the end of the day, I don’t have to read and engage and absorb every thing available online to have a flourishing life.
So until next week, grace and peace!
