The Pope, the Mass, and….Kenny G?

I typically don’t have much to say about music (I leave that to the much more insightful Marc Barnes). And it’s even more rare that I write about liturgical music.

But I just had to post about this.

Pope Benedict XVI just finished his long-awaited visit to his native Germany. It’s always a big deal anytime a Pope visits his home country. For example, when Pope John Paul II returned to Poland he sparked the end of Communism.

Yet amid all the anticipation and excitement, I doubt Benedict expected this overture during Mass in Berlin:

“The only redeeming part of the video is the money shot at the end when Benedict looks off to the side after sitting down, as though he’s looking to see who he needs to excommunicate for spiritually and emotionally anesthetizing the congregation.”
