Priests!…..Twins!

This morning’s Mass was really special. We celebrated with two priests who were not only brothers, but twins–and one a bishop!

Bishop David Thompson flew down to our neck of the woods to celebrate the 60th anniversary (!!) of his twin brother’s ordination to the priesthood. His brother, Monsignor Ed Thompson, is my long-time mentor and spiritual director. So I was grateful to finally meet the other Thompson Twin.

Two twins, each a priest.
Two priests, each for 60 years.
Two sages, each with 88 years of wisdom.

Together, the two have celebrated over 50,000 Masses. And they’ve undoubtedly influenced thousands of people.

That’s a light. Not a halo.

A related side story: Both brothers are huge devotees of (soon-to-be-Saint) Archbishop Fulton Sheen. Describing themselves as “Sheen-fiends,” the two met their hero on multiple occasions (Monsignor Ed describes some of them in this video.)

Back when the two twins were in seminary, they trekked to New York to attend one of Sheen’s radio broadcasts. Amazingly, they were invited to speak with Sheen after the show. As they approached their hero, Sheen looked at them with his big eyes, and loudly exclaimed:

“Seminarians! Twin seminarians! Future priests!……God love you!”

And then he embraced them both in a deep brotherly hug, one great priest inspiring two more.
